Brighid’s back to her roots with open invite

from The Kerry Kingdom, 3 November 2006

Her experience working with people with serious illness has prompted a Kerry Psychotherapist to develop a programme that guides participants towards taking personal responsibility for their own well-being.

Brighid Daly Connolly, originally form Currans, has returned to the county after several decades of living and learning elsewhere.

Just over a year ago she decided to launch a pilot scheme in Tralee, Killarney and Castleisland which are the three towns close to her Firies base. The initative proved so successful that Brighid has this week announced the availability of a programme, which she calls The Invitation to the community at large.

Brighid has operated a private practice in Galway for the last decade while simultaneously holding the role of teacher and therapist in the Galway Bay Health Farm and at the Slanu cancer help centre where she was co-facilitator in the week long residential programme for people with life threatening disease.

It was as a direct result of exposure to so many courageous individuals faced with so much personal change at once that Brighid began researching ways to excite authentic interest in self care and personal responsibility prior to necessity – in short a prevention programme

While at Slanu, Brighid was introduced to the work of Dr Rosy Daniel and the project she developed called Health Creation. Here she discovered Dr Daniel’s teaching device called The Picture of Health “this teaching tool provides a self-assessment exercise that allows us to examine our present standard of self care physically, mentally, environmentally and spiritually. It does so my identifying twelve health creation principles and offering us ten accompanying questions in relation to each principle said Brighid.

Dr Rosy is a leading integrative medical consultant based in the Apthorp centre in Bath and is also the author of The Cancer Directory. Brighid trained with Dr Rosy as a Health Creation mentor in 2005 and received permission from her to use the picture of Health as a teaching tool in the introductory phase of her own programme. As a way of completing this pilot scheme, Dr Rosy Daniel has been invited to Kerry to give a two- day workshop on November 4/5.

Brighid hopes this will be the first of several workshops featuring committed individuals who work on ways to awaken what she terms strength of spirit. “although we live in such fearful and disillusioning days in relation to disease, I believe there exists in our midst another movement, a major opportunity to turn and face the role of disease plays in life and the invitation it can be to explore new depths of understanding and respect for life and what we need around us to sustain it” she said

“I hope the community can accept the invitation in the spirit in which it is intended as a bridge-building process between our desire to be well and what life asks us to learn and unlearn on our way there”
